SCREEN FLICKERING ISSUE FOR WINDOWS 10 TROUBLESHOOT

CHECKING THE TASK MANAGER

Press Ctrl + Alt + Delete/ Ctrl + Shift + Delete to open the Task Manager.

  • If the Task Manager flickers with every other application then the problem isn’t with any software. It is a display driver problem.
  • If the Task Manager doesn’t flicker with the rest of the screen  then there is the issue with any installed application that is incompatible.

Now that you have identified the trouble point, you can proceed to the specific section to fix your screen flickering issue.

IF THE ISSUE IS WITH YOUR DISPLAY DRIVER

If your Task Manager flickers along with the screen then there is an issue with your display driver. If you have updated your Windows recently, you need to roll back your display driver. If you are unable to roll back, try to update or uninstall it to fix the flickering issue.

Roll back your display driver

  1. Type device manager in the search box. Select the Display Manager from the results and expand the Display Adapters.
  2. Under the Display Adapter section right click on the adapter and select Properties.
  3. Select the tab of Driver and then select Roll Back Driver> Yes.
  4. Restart your device to apply the changes.

Pre- Requisites- To roll back your display driver or to even uninstall you must have administrator privileges. If the roll back option is not available, that means the system doesn’t have any previous version stored to roll back to. Then you won’t be able to complete the process.

Update your display driver

  1. Type device manager in the search box. Select the Display Manager from the results and expand the Display Adapters.
  2. Under the Display Adapter section right click on the adapter and select Update.

Uninstall your display driver

  • Type device manager in the search box. Select the Display Manager from the results and expand the Display Adapters.
  • Under the Display Adapter section right click on the adapter and select Properties.
  • “Delete the driver software for this device” option must be selected from the list of options. Select on the check box and click on okay.
  • Restart your system to save the changes.
  1. Type device manager in the search box.  Select the Display Manager from the results and expand the Display Adapters.
  2. Under the Display Adapter section right click on the adapter and select Update.

If the issue is because of an incompatible application

You have identified an incompatible application as the reason as your task manager doesn’t flicker.

Update an app

  1. Check the Microsoft Store for latest updates with the application.
  2. If you hadn’t downloaded the application from the official Microsoft Store then check the manufacturer’s site for latest updates.

Uninstalling an app

Some applications are not compatible with Windows 10 and can cause several disturbances like screen flickering when they are running. You can uninstall the application by following the below mentioned procedure.

  1. In the start button go to Settings>Apps>Apps & Features.
  2. Scroll down the list of apps and find the app you want to uninstall.
  3. Select the app and then select on Uninstall. Confirm your choice by selecting Yes in the popup that appears.

Restart your device once the application is uninstalled to check the screen flickering issue. Try uninstalling the latest installed apps one by one and checking for the screen flickering issue. Once you have identified which app was causing the problem you can visit the Microsoft store and reinstall the remaining apps by visiting the My Library section. If not then try going to the manufacturer’s site and install.

SCREEN FLICKERING ISSUE FOR MACBOOK PRO

In a Macbook things work differently. It is often due to the compatibility problems between the new operating system upgrades and the GPU. There are the latest macOS updates that solve this issue but here is a troubleshoot guide for you to look at.

RESTARTING YOUR MAC- You can always look at this option, as this fixes things a lot of times. Go to Apple Menu>Restart.

Updating your macOS- Go to the Apple Menu>System Preferences. Check for the latest versions and if any update is available install the updates. Backup your data before performing this operation.

Clear caches and system junk- If neither of the above options solved the problem you can clear the caches and system junk of your macbook. There are several third party apps available to perform this function smoothly.

Adjust Energy Saver settings- If you are using MacBook Pro most of the screen flickering issue in these devices is caused by the energy saver mode. If you have enabled “Automatic Graphics switching” then the system tries to switch between the graphics chips and then things break, the screen flickers.  Disable this option and then restart your system.

You can check other things like tweaking the resolution, brightness, entering the Safe Mode etc and check for screen flickering issues. If all of these steps do not seem to work then it can be due to some hardwire issue. We suggest you visit your nearest Apple Software center and get it checked.
