In the eyes of some eCommerce businesses, eCommerce SEO specifically and eCommerce SEO, in general, is little more than witchcraft and superstition. So it can be a bit hard to get straight answers to advanced questions.
But SEO, though efforts to improve it will vary, offers measurable results, and if you ask the right eCommerce SEO experts, you can get straight answers.
Speaking of eCommerce SEO experts, we asked one of the experts at 1DigitalⓇ Agency, an eCommerce SEO agency with over 10 years of experience, just to see how they’d answer.
This is what we found.
1. How do you define SEO? SEO, which stands for search engine optimization, is a collection of techniques that together help to improve the organic rankings of your website.
It consists of adjusting website aspects known as ranking signals. Some important ranking signals are site structure, content, link structure, site security, and site speed. Improving each of these things (in accordance with keyword research), will improve the optimization of an online store.
Think of it this way. You pick a number of specific keywords that you want your website to rank for. Then you optimize each of these ranking factors that I mentioned (and others). If it’s done when, when a user searches for that keyword or a search term containing it, your website will rank more highly in Google, making it easier for it to be found.2. Can you tell us what SEO is not? I cannot stress this enough – eCommerce SEO is not a get-rich-quick scheme. It is not like pay-per-click where you can launch a campaign and immediately attribute new traffic and sales to it. Sometimes, it’s hard to tell directly where SEO is or has been responsible for influxes of new traffic.
Instead, it is a slow and steady kind of game where you make ongoing increases to your website because in the long term, it pays off with higher organic standings, traffic, and sales.
3. What SEO tools does your agency use? I’m actually a writer here, so I don’t use all of the tools that the project managers use. However, I used SEMRush for the purposes of optimizing content, as well as some popular, easily available plug-ins like Yoast to help with on-page optimization.
But anyone can use them for that. We also use SEMRush for keyword research, as well as Google Analytics and Google Search Console for following trends, as well as a proprietary, company-created dashboard for measuring organic keyword movements and health.
4. How do you measure performance? Refer to my last answer – in the suite of tools that we use (and others that the rest of the team uses) we can track changes in rankings, impressions, traffic, and sales.
There are many ways to measure the success of an SEO campaign for an eCommerce website but probably the three most important are changes in organic rankings, which correspond to higher organic impressions and conversion rates (sales). If these are up, the marketing strategy is doing its job.
5. Is content important in SEO? Is it possible to create an effective campaign without a content strategy? You’ve heard it said that content is king right? It’s impossible to author an SEO campaign for an eCommerce store without a content strategy, and no SEO package is complete without one.
Sure, you can boost site speed and security, as well as a few other ranking signals without it, but how are you going to optimize anything else at all without keywords? When you break it down to the basics, targets keywords themselves are a form of content.
They direct most on-page optimizations, all sorts of product page copy, blog copy, and even influence link building. The links themselves are not content, but they are still very context-dependent. Where are you linking from? A page with content. That’s what gets you the referral traffic, and Google knows that.
So, yes, content is not only important, it is critically important and consumes a vast amount of resources for most eCommerce SEO service providers, but the results are well worth it.
